WELCOME BACK, SUSHMA!

The past week has seen the voluntary exit of one eminent and honest lady from the NDA government, Ms Mamata Bannerjee, and simultaneously, as if to prevent the scales from tilting, Ms Sushma Swaraj has been inducted into the cabinet. While one may have the greatest admiration for Ms Bannerjee( after all, attempting to dislodge the formidable Jyoti Basu is no small task), one has much more than admiration for Ms Swaraj.
Of course Ms Swaraj failed to get the government in power in Delhi; of course, she also failed to defeat Ms Sonia Gandhi in Karnataka; of course, she also let off some steam soon after she discovered that the NDA had no suitable berth to offer her despite her valiant attempt to oust Ms Gandhi from national politics. It is but natural for somebody who has given her all for the BJP to feel a bit peeved at the high command's cold indifference to her even after she had fought on its behalf.
One doesn't have to be a cynic to conclude that politicians love a winner; a loser in political life is nobody's friend. You are only as good as your last victory! And yet, as a person who has observed Ms Swaraj keenly as she has moved from strength to strength and smiled at all the right people, I was dismayed to see her undeserved dismissal from active politics. The way she was discarded.. she could have been yesterday's newspaper! Her enforced exile was an unforced error. And this is politics, vintage politics. But the lady silently waited it out. Her absence from active politics was not only a loss for the BJP, it was a loss for the nation. I must confess that my despair with the Congress-imitating new BJP had a great deal to do with its side-lining of Ms Swaraj.
As an I & B Minister, she moved fast and effectively, the last time she took that portfolio. Her smart moves were welcomed by the entire film industry. She was part of the solution, and definitely not part of the problem. It didn't require a person with a high IQ to figure that one out.
At one time ( thanks to V.C.Shukla of the Emergency fame) the I&B Ministry was considered as one of the four most important portfolios in the cabinet; it was, therefore, allotted by the then Prime Minister, Mr Morarjee Desai, to no less a functionary than the eminent L.K.Advani, who proved once and for all that he was no Goebbels, and certainly no fascist, when he removed all the curbs that the press and the media had been restricted by. For Ms Swaraj to head such a Ministry and step into Mr Advani's shoes, is proof of her mettle. At the risk of sounding hasty and premature, I would like to stick my neck out to say that, to me, Ms Swaraj is P.M. material.
And it is this that stands in her way. The more she proves to the world that she is shrewd, smart and media-savvy, the more her colleagues will try to trip her up. It is going to be no cake-walk for the lady, and this is an under-statement.
Ms Swaraj has all the makings of a future P.M. Jaswant Singh, L.K.Advani etc are all senior citizens; what India needs is somebody with the freshness of Sushma, the dynamism and dedication of Sushma and the charisma of Sushma.
Welcome back, Sushmajee. You have been wronged; but that is past now. Now its time for you to prove to the world that the lioness has been released from the cage and has been allowed to return to her natural habitat, the jungle.
Writing from Bangalore which I am visiting now, I am struck by the number of houses that carry Mr Rajkumar's photograph on their balcony windows and doors. And yet fewer people will celebrate Mr Rajkumar's return to freedom than those celebrating Ms Swaraj's return to active politics today.
Salaam with both hands. India awaits you!
And the BJP will do well to overlook Sushma the next time it wants to be bailed out of a bad situation. Ms Swaraj is too important to be used for such childish and trivial pursuits.

Here's some news that I read this morning: Ms Swaraj wants to make the television a family medium, which is to be read correctly as, Ms Swaraj wants to be the morality police-woman to control what Indians see on television.
I don't get it.
Why not pay attention to driving Zee and Star out of business by improving the television programmes being beamed out by the placid and wishy-washy, anaemic Doordarshan? Instead of paying attention to the real problems, this is the quick fix. The same old political short-cut... it is disappointing to see Sushma Swaraj doing this.
If parents cannot censor what the children should watch, and if parents hate what is being beamed out, why not throw the television set into the Arabian Sea? Because many of us don't have children or know how to lead our children to watch the right programmes, why do we have to watch things like, "Amchi Mati, Amcha Marsan" and the idiotic puerile stuff meant for retards? Enough of this Congressism. Get moving, Sushma, in the right direction and don't take cop-outs such as this.
Please, Sushma, don't break my heart.
