American Hindu, If you would like a tattoo of OM, don't worry so much about dirty needles. It is very easy to make sure that your tattoo artist uses aseptic practices, such as changing gloves after touching *anything* during the procedure, a 'bagged' gun (a plastic bag over the tattoo gun motor, rubber banded at the bottom), and most important, you watch them take fresh needles from a sealed sterile wrapper. You can ask around for reputable shops and artists, some are better than others, and my motto is You Get What You Pay For.
Magic markers are not made for skin. May I suggest if you prefer a temporary OM, you might try henna, which will last a couple of weeks, or Hollywood Ink, which lasts about as long.
Good Luck!

OK in this day and age, I dont you'll get persecuted for having an OM tattoo. Also if you go to a recognized tattoo parlour, I don't think you should fear contracting a disease. I would get one, but the thought of several needles piercing through my skin all at the same time does not entertain me.

what are the hindu thoughts on people getting tattoo's on their bodies? hindu deity tattoos?
thanks.
Djsunyc, i would suggest you do not have a religious tattoo done for these reasons:
1) Dharma, and all its components, including religious symbols, should not be used just for a "show and tell" thing, or for the sake of "looking like a cool secular modern day Hindu". Hindu religion should not be made into a fashion accessory. By making such a tattoo, you would play part to the encouragement of Hindu religious symbols which many take very seriously as the symbol of God. Ask yourself this: What am i trying to show/prove to myself or anyone else, by having a tattoo of a religious symbol/sign done on me?
Im mean seriously, dont you think its just such a cheap act of "show"? Hindu religion is not a sign on your arm, but a fire in your heart. Keep it at that, and do things that will strengthen dharma rather than weaken it by making it into the next fashion trend (here in sydney there are many white and non white people who wear the Aum symbol in their necklace/chains as a fashion accessory even though theyre beef eaters).
2) By having a religious tattoo done, you are making it vulnerable to everyday dirt and grime. The dirt on your skin that come externally (eg, dust) and internally (eg, natural oil from skin, or sweat which stinks and is sticky so it will attract more dirt). Dirtying a religious symbol is not very "Hindu" in itself. Respect your religion. Respect its symbols. And dont make them into a cheap gimick.
If youre doing it to be cool, its a sick gesture. If youre doing it to be religious, its sick gesture. Get a tattoo of something non religious if you really must have one. I wouldnt even suggest a temporary Hindu tattoo.

I apologise for this, but I have read a bit more of these forums, after posting this and have decided this is not the place for me. While I was hoping for a community of folks with spiritual beliefs.. I have instead found another place where people argue mostly for the purpose of making themselves right and the other person wrong. This is NOT the sort of community I was looking for.
This is merely my opinion formed from reading over the posts here.. I could very well be wrong, and if this is the case.. it is my loss for not sticking around to find out.

I'm sorry you guys(ChrisLockhart & Atmakryia) feel that way. I opologise sincerely if I have in anyway through my posts contributed to your decision and conclusion .
In my opinion people should have the right to free-thought. Nobody can say you should think in a certain way. But just as you do, others too have the right to voice their opinion so long they don't dictate what you should and should not do. But people it seems have a habit of doing just that more often than not. Hey, what can we expect? This is after all a public board for the public.
One thing I have to say is that this is a way more informative and useful site than the other millions of sites out there. Hope you guys change your minds.
p.s. Atmakryia, your posts are always very different(in a positive way) than most other posts. Hope you'll continue to post.
Namashkar.

Namaste Chris It is my understanding that it is not unusual in this phil for people to debate and ask where in the Vedas etc is the foundation for their position. Many of us are novices, like myself, and some of us are well versed in some of the Vedas but I don't think any of us knows them all.We are all at different places on this path and egos etc do come into play. However if you stick around you will learn who to pay attention and who not to.If we all made the same statements etc it would certainly be a boring forum.
