I don't know anybody that still cares about the caste system. I see plenty of matrimonial ads that clearly state "caste no bar." Then again, I live in the West. It might be different in India.
Now these days, caste shouldn't play a role in deciding who to marry. As originally prescribed in the scriptures, caste is determined by one's qualities and it's also related to occupation. Most people don't even practice their varnas correctly. The whole Indian concept (not referring to Hinduism) of "being born into your caste" is just screwed up. I don't know how people can call themselves "Brahmins" when they basically do things that are firmly against the core principles of Hinduism. For example, being greedy, cheating on your wife, smoking, etc. I don't understand how a person born into the "Sudra" caste can become an educated, succesful and pious man, and still be referred to as a "lower-caste Hindu" by others.
